The MCBMC was set up jointly by the Malaysian Bar Council, the Mediation Centre of the China Council for the Promotion of International trade (“CCPIT”), and the China Chamber of International Commerce (“CCOIC”) in Beijing pursuant to a Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation Agreement signed by the parties on the 19th of September 2017 under the Belt and Road Initiative (“BRI”).

The BRI is a development strategy to strengthen infrastructure, trade, and investment links between China and some 65 other countries both over land (Belt) and sea (Road). A global cross-border project; the BRI will be navigating the ever-changing legal landscapes of the different countries involved, which will inevitably give rise to legal issues and disputes. The MCBMC was set up as a cross border dispute resolution body in anticipation of these legal issues and disputes.

The officer bearers of the MCBMC consist of two (2) co-chairmen and two (2) co-secretary-generals, supported by the MCBMC Secretariats, based both in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and in Beijing, People’s Republic of China.
